Celebrate Mom Locally This Mother's Day

Stay in the neighborhood and treat mom to a day to remember—and a great gift.

 

Years ago a man made of macaroni would send your mom into a tizzy of delight and pride. These days, though, you want to give her a little something more to show your appreciation. Many businesses in Plum and Oakmont have something special for any type of mom.

Outdoorsy Mom

As the writing of this article, the weather is looking good for Sunday. Make sure mom packs a sweater, and take her on a picnic.

Riverview Park in Oakmont and Boyce Park and Larry Mills Park in Plum offer a great setting for a picnic lunch. You can pack your own or stop by Oakmont Bakery or the Oakmont Deli  & Specialty Steaks, both in Oakmont, for some to-go sandwiches and sides.

After lunch, make sure you take a walk on the hiking trails at Boyce or by the river at Riverview. Your outdoorsy mom will enjoy the scenery and the company. 

Green-Thumb Mom

Is mom a nature lover? Beall's Greenhouse Nursery & Supply and Holiday Garden Center, both in Plum, offer all kinds of shrubs, plants and flowers for mom to spruce up the yard—just don’t forget to help her! Also, stop by Ace Hardware in Oakmont or Stanford Home Center in Plum for all the supplies she’ll need, like gardening gloves, shovels and top soil. 

Creative Mom

Provide mom with all she needs to get her crafting on. Get mom beading supplies for a bargain at MoonRise Beads’ retirement sale going on now or sign her up for some knitting classes at Yarns by Design, both in Oakmont.

Stressed Mom

Give mom the gift of relaxation with a gift certificate to a salon or spa in town. Step Up Styles and A Hairy Situation, both in Plum, are one-stop beauty shops offering massages, manicures, pedicures, hair styling and color, and other personal care services. Mom will walk away feeling like a new, relaxed woman for sure.

Sentimental Mom

If mom still displays your handprints from kindergarten, she’s definitely one who will appreciate something small and sentimental.

Mae's Hallmark in Oakmont, The Greeting Gallery and Hallmark Cards and Gifts in Plum are the perfect places to find not only the perfect Mother’s Day card, but also picture frames, albums, mugs, and other small but meaningful gifts.

Hard-to-Buy-for Mom

Sometimes, you just can’t find the right gift for mom. Instead of just getting something because it’s Mother’s Day, get her a gift card to her favorite restaurant, clothing store, craft store or where ever else she enjoys. Holiday Park Shop & Save, in Plum and Giant Eagle in Verona carry gift cards for just about anywhere mom would want to go. You can also stop by mom's favorite local spot and get a gift card.

For Every Mom

Treat mom to a brunch or dinner at a local restaurant. John Anthony's Restaurant & Lounge, in Plum, has a brunch ($19.95 for adults) and dinner ($24.95 for adults) buffet, and Palmieri's in Plum is offering a brunch buffet ($24.95 for adults) from 1 to 7 p.m. 

Hoffstot's Cafe Monaco and Chelsea Grille Inc, both in Oakmont, are offering a limited dinner menu with special meals and a few of their favorites. 

Make sure you make reservations.

Don’t forget the flowers! The florists aren’t open on Mother’s Day so you’ll need to plan for the perfect posies. Bernie's Flower Shop and Oakmont Floral in Oakmont, Forever Greene Flowers Inc. in Plum, and other local florists are taking orders now for Mother’s Day.
