Oakmont Author Combines Love of History, Family Into Book Series

Melissa Havran of Oakmont has released her first children's book and is in the process of working on a second.

Melissa Havran and her family were having a discussion one night when her father, a college professor, mentioned that many of his students didn't know where Gettysburg is.

That didn't sit well with Havran—an American history lover—so she decided to do something about it.

The Oakmont resident thought about writing a history book for children for about a year before starting the process in 2012.

"I submitted manuscripts about 12 times," Havran said. "I didn't think it would be that difficult."

Soon after, her idea was picked up by AuthorHouse Book Publishing—the "Ava, American Dreamer" series was born. The series revolves around a little girl, Ava, and her dreams, which put her center stage during different events in American History.

The first book, "George Washington," was released last month.

Last week, Havran read "George Washington" to a large group of children during the Oakmont Carnegie Library's Book Buddies Storytime program. Havran also is hosting a fundraiser for Wounded Warriors at the library this week. Look at the sidebar at the end of this story for more information.

She was joined by her mother, Lynn Botta, who is a Plum resident and illustrator for "Ava, American Dreamer." Also in attendance was Ava, 3, Havran's niece and the inspiration behind the series' main character.

Havran is expecting her first child this year, and she said she wants children like her son and her niece to understand the importance of American History.

"History is something I am really passionate about," Havran said. "I thought writing books would be a great avenue to share my passion with children. I want my son to be able to appreciate history and a love for books."

Botta said she has enjoyed working on the series with her daughter.

"This was my first attempt at drawing something cartoonish, but it's been so exciting," she said. "I hope this sparks an interest in children so they can learn about what's going on in their land."

Havran currently is working on the second book of the series, which will focus on the Oregan Trail. That book will be released later this year.

BOOK FUNDRAISER

Havran is hosting a fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project at the Oak Room in the library on Thursday, March 28. She and Botta will be on hand to read from the book from 5 to 8 p.m. There will be refreshments and books available for sale. A portion of the proceeds from the book sale will benefit Wounded Warriors.
