Oakmont Officials Approve Traffic, Parking Trials

Council agreed to temporarily increase parking limits in the business district and prohibit left turns from Advance Way onto Allegheny Avenue.

Motorists in Oakmont Borough might encounter a few changes on roads for the next two months.

On Monday, borough council agreed to implement two 60-day trials—one increasing the parking limits in the business district and the other prohibiting a left turn onto Allegheny Avenue near the Oakmont Bakery.

During the trial, parking within the Allegheny River Boulevard business district will increase from two hours to three hours.

"This is something the merchants have wanted," Councilwoman Laurie Saxon said. "It's been in the works for a while."

Left turns onto Allegheny Avenue from the Adeline Brown/Advance Way intersection also will be prohibited for 60 days.

Signs will be installed at the affected intersection and on the curbing in front of the Oakmont Bakery.

Kudos to Council for these small changes...I have cringed many times on Sunday mornings at the Bakery, watching people make a blind left turn on to Allegheny Avenue in that area.

Here's a really "out of the box" notion that Council might want to consider. How about making every other of the numbered streets in Oakmont, one-way alternating from one to the next street? Several of those streets are too narrow to allow parking on both sides and two-way traffic down the middle...Why not make them all one-way streets???

Any residents have a view on this idea???
