Pittsburgh Crew Coach to Row for the Gold in Olympic Finals

Romanian Florin Curuea competes in the Men's Four.

Popular Pine-Richland crew and Pittsburgh Rowing Club coach Florin Curuea is closing in on an Olympic dream.

The four-man Romanian team for which he rows is one of 12 that will compete in the Olympic finals on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. London time in Eton Dorney.

The Eton Dorney Rowing Centre at Dorney Lake is located around 25 miles west of London.

The race will be a tough one.

In the semi-finals on Thursday, Great Britain came in first with a time of 5:58.26; Romania was in 12th with a 6:12.74 time.

But in the initial heats on Monday, the times were better for the Romanians—the team placed fifth with a 5:52:87 time.

NBC will live stream the event at 4:30 a.m. on Saturday. Click here for details.

Curuea has coached several students from the Plum-Oakmont area.

It’s always fun to cheer on a hometown favorite in the Olympics; it gives people a reason to tune in and see some of the less popular sports. Thanks for information on when NBC was going to stream it, but that is too early for me to enjoy the event. But I did set a recording of it on my Dish Hopper so I could enjoy it later. With up to 2,000 hours of recording space I can watch rowing and have room for my other regularly-recorded programs. My coworkers at Dish love the Olympics and I love to follow people from different communities because it gives faces to the sports.
