Riverview Hosts Model UN Conference
Districts from around the region participated in the event held last week.
Riverview High School in Oakmont hosted the third-annual Riverview Model United Nations Conference last week.
About 170 students from 10 school districts—52 students were from Riverview—participated in the non-competitive conference, which was an opportunity for students to hone their skills for the upcoming Model UN season.
Students from Riverview, Allegheny Valley, Sewickley, Fox Chapel, North Allegheny, Trinity, South Side Beaver, Moon, Burrell, and Seneca Valley participated many spirited debates. The debates centered around solving the Syrian crisis, the drought in the Sahel, rights of minorities and women worldwide, the issue of rights for refugees and many other issues currently facing the global community.
According to Riverview teacher and Model UN sponsor Ken Kubistek, the students were very well prepared and knowledgeable in their topic areas.
"The discussions led to many possible solutions to the issues facing the leaders of our current world," he said. "All students who participated, whether delegate or student chair should be proud of their accomplishments."
