Westbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel Single Lane Traffic Schedule Change
Work to begin one hour earlier.
Work to rehabilitate the Squirrel Hill Tunnel on the Parkway East will begin at 9 p.m. nightly from now on.
The previous schedule had work and single lane restrictions beginning at 10 p.m. Overnight restrictions will occur according to the following schedule through July 13.
- 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday-Thursday nights
- 9 p.m. to 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights
No work or restrictions will occur July 2-4. The extra hour is needed to allow the contractor to maximize work hours in preparation for upcoming weekend closures.
PennDOT also reminds motorists the first of eight full westbound weekend closures requiring detours will occur the weekend of July 27 to 30. A separate release with detour information will be issued in early July. The closures will continue through late fall and will be scheduled to minimize impacts on downtown events when possible.
No outbound (eastbound) traffic restrictions or closures are planned as part of this project at this time in 2012. Routine tunnel maintenance may still necessitate some short-term, overnight outbound restrictions.
The a $49.5 million project to rehabilitate the Squirrel Hill Tunnel includes updating electrical, lighting, air control and ventilation systems, structural repairs to the walls and arched ceiling, tile repairs, installation of a water line and other improvements. To minimize impacts on the traveling public, rehabilitation work on the bridge that carries the Parkway East over Commercial Street will be performed as part of the tunnel project. Expansion dam on ramps at the Edgewood Swissvale interchange (Exit 77) will also be replaced.
