Republican Keith Rothfus of Sewickley defeated incumbent Democrat Mark Critz of Johnstown by a margin of 52 to 48 percent to win election to the newly re-drawn Pennsylvania 12th congressional district. Rothfus said his number one priority is the economy. "We got get the economy rolling again," he said after delivering a victory speech at the Holiday Inn on McKnight Road in Ross Township Tuesday night. "I'm concerned about tax policy, about the possibility of another tax increase on our small businesses on January first. The president said a couple of years ago; you don't want to raise taxes in a slow economy. And so we have to convince the president of the wisdom of his argument from a couple of years ago." Longtime state Rep. Joe Markosek will serve two more years in office. On Tuesday, Markosek, a Democrat from Monroeville who has been representing the 25th Legislative District for 30 years, beat Republican Mike Doyle, a Plum councilman, for the second time—the two faced off in 2010, when Markosek beat Doyle by 1,600 votes. With 46 out of 46 precincts in Allegheny County reporting, Markosek received 13,720 votes—56.9 percent—to Doyle's 10,348 votes—42.9 percent. In Westmoreland County, Markosek received 2,303 votes—44.6 percent—and Doyle received 2,862 votes —55.4 percent—with 5 of 5 precincts reporting. Democrat Mike Doyle has won a 10th term in Congress, defeating Republican Hans Lessmann for the Pennsylvania Congressional District 14 seat. Doyle, the incumbent from Forest Hills who is currently serving his ninth term in Congress, won with 77 percent of the vote. Doyle's tenure in Congress began in 1995. He serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and is a member of the subcommittees on Energy and Power and Communications and Technology. State Rep. Frank Dermody of Oakmont will continue to represent the state's 33rd Legislative District. On Tuesday, Dermody, a Democrat, beat Republican Gerry Vaerewyck of West Deer—the two also faced off during the 2010 election. With 54 of 54 precincts reporting, Dermody received 15,945 votes—58.9 percent—to Vaerewyck's 11,092 votes—40.9 percent. These results are unofficial and will become official upon certification by the Allegheny County Board of Elections. The district covers Oakmont and a portion of Plum Borough. Incumbent Tony DeLuca beat Lawrence Paladin on Tuesday night.
Longtime state Rep. Tony DeLuca will serve two more years in office. On Tuesday, DeLuca, a Democrat from Penn Hills who has been representing the 32nd Legislative District for 29 years, beat Republican Lawrence Paladin of Penn Hills by a landslide. With 61 out of 61 precincts reporting, DeLuca received 21,437 votes—74.8 percent—to Paladin's 7,171 votes—25 percent. These results are unofficial and will become official upon certification by the Allegheny County Board of Elections. The Republican presidential candidate makes a final campaign stop in Moon before heading back to Boston to await results.
In one of his final appearances of the presidential campaign, Republican nominee Mitt Romney landed this afternoon in Moon Township, exiting a plane at the Atlantic Aviation hangar before leaving in a motorcade. The stop was brief—Romney did not speak before stepping into an SUV motorcade of five vehicles. After walking out of his plane, he waved to a crowd of cheering supporters packed outside of the runway gate.
