About the event: The Western Pennsylvania Mito Group of the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF) based in Plum is holding an 'Energy for Life Walkathon' to raise funds to support and educate those individuals and families affected by mitochondrial disease and raise funds for research towards a cure for the disease. Walkers of all ages are invited to participate. Contact your friends, neighbors, family, and co-workers and build a team that will provide the energy for those in our community who suffer from mitochondrial disease.

About Mitochondrial Disease: We all have mitochondria. They are the powerhouses of our cells. Healthy mitochondria allow our bodies to move, to see and hear, breathe --- even to age. When mitochondria fail less energy is made available to the body. As this process is repeated throughout the body, organ systems begin to fail and the life of the affected person is compromised.

Mitochondrial disease is a serious, life threatening condition. It affects both children and adults. Mitochondrial
disease is difficult to diagnose and symptoms vary. Mitochondrial disease can lead to en early death.
There is no cure for mitochondrial disease.
