Obituary - Allan R. Kennedy

Allan R. Kennedy, of Oakmont, passed away on Monday, May 12, 2014, at the age of 87.

Allan was the beloved husband of the late Sarajane (Roche) Kennedy.  He is survived by his children Amy (Chuck) Starrett of Swissvale, PA, Kimberly (Ed) Kay of Pittsford, NY, Kathy (Rick) Webster of Kennesaw, GA, Cindy (Rick) Jeroski of Oakmont, PA, and Marty (Maureen) Kennedy of Oakmont. He is also survived by grandchildren Edward III, Andrew(Emily), Timothy and Jeffrey Kay, Lauren (Marc) McAfee, Rachel, Kurt and Tracey Webster, Ryan and Jason Jeroski , Erin and Molly Kennedy and one great- grandson Charlie Kay.  He was preceded in death by his parents Samuel P. and Ethel Mae (Wiles) Kennedy and his brothers Ronald and Sherman Kennedy.

Al was an Oakmont High School graduate with two degrees from the University of Pittsburgh.  His career in education spanned 40 years.  He was Riverview’s first principal from the Oakmont-Verona merger in 1971 through his retirement in 1991.  He worked at Oakmont and Riverview with Sally, his wife and true love of 53 years.

Following retirement, Al left a lasting mark in Oakmont through his participation in many volunteer activities.  He served as a member of the Oakmont Boro Council for 27 years.  He was a longtime member of the Oakmont Lions Clubs, was on the board of the Riverview Community Action Center, sang in the Oakmont United Methodist Church choir, delivered Meals on Wheels and escorted residents to activities at Presbyterian Senior Care.  Local residents saw his commitment to service in action each winter as coordinator and chief bell ringer for the Salvation Army Kettle Drive.  Al was named Oakmont’s Citizen of the Year for 1985 by the Advance Leader.  

Al had a passion for sports and coached for many decades.  He was head coach for Fox Chapel and Aspinwall High football and the Oakmont high baseball teams.  He was also an assistant high school football coach for Zelienople, Oakmont, Riverview and Springdale.

Friends will be received Wednesday, May 14, 2014 from 1-4 & 6-9 pm in the English Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 378 Maryland Avenue, Oakmont, PA 15139.  A funeral service will be held at 11 am Thursday in the Oakmont United Methodist Church.  EVERYONE PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH.  Interment will follow in Verona Cemetery, Oakmont, PA. Memorial contributions may be made to RCAC, The Salvation Army or the Oakmont United Methodist Church.
