Obituary - John R. "Hoppy" Hopkins

John R. "Hoppy" Hopkins, of Pittsburgh, PA, died on October 19, 2013, at the age of 80. 

John was born in Hornell, NY and lived in Pittsburgh since age four.  He graduated from Aspinwall High School in 1951 and Grove City College in 1955 where he competed on the golf team for all four years.  He served in the U.S. Army for two years and was an agent with Northwestern Mutual for two years.  John was an avid golfer and member of Alcoma Golf Club since 1950 where he earned five Club Championship titles and one Senior Club Championship title.  He was an inductee into the Aspinwall Sports Hall of Fame for golf in 1977. 

John retired after 35 year’s service from Moore Corporation in 1994.  He was a member and usher at Shadyside Presbyterian Church since 1961.  He is survived by his wife Barbara of 54 years; two children Heidi Ewbank of Pittsburgh, PA and David  (Evelyne) Hopkins of Doylestown, PA; five grandchildren; Whitney (Edward) Williams,  Zachary Ewbank, Mercedes Hopkins, Gabriela Hopkins, Juliette Hopkins; four great grandchildren; Riley, Avery, Camyrn , and Alexis Williams; and his brother Richard Hopkins of Allison Park, PA.

Private interment will be at Lakewood Memorial Gardens.  Memorial donations in his name may be made to the general student scholarship fund of Grove City College, Advancement Office, 100 Campus Drive, Grove City, PA, 16127 or to the Caddies Scholarship Fund of Western Pennsylvania Golf Association Scholarship Fund, 324 Fourth Street, Pittsburgh, PA  15238.
