Earth Week Events Planned in the Plum-Oakmont Area

In honor of Earth Day, various organizations are sponsoring events and activities in the community.

Earth Day Celebration

Verona

Verona is hosting its third annual "Earth Day Celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 27 at Verona Municipal Park, 736 E. Railroad Ave.

The family event stresses energy conservation through "green technologies"  with demonstrations, literature, product vendors, food vendors, live music, and a kid's corner all geared toward energy conservation.

Great American Cleanup

Monroeville

Monroeville will host the "18th Annual Jack Sedlak Memorial Clean Up Day," a litter cleanup from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 20 starting at the Monroeville Municipal Building. The event is partnering with the Monroeville Area Chamber of Commerce's "Shred It' event and Electronic Recycling. For more information contact Joe Sedlak at 724-856-3306 or sedlaj@monroeville.pa.us

Plum

The Whispering Pines Homeowners Association is hosting a beautification event from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 20 at the Whispering Pines Development in Plum. Rain date is Sunday, April 21. For more information contact Lauren Freeman at 412-512-5301 or email lfreeman@boe.com

Verona

Resident Luke Mattocks has scheduled a Volunteer Clean-Up Day for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 20. Volunteers will assemble in the Verona Municipal Building's parking lot.  

Work gloves, safety vests, plastic bags and water can be provided, if you need them.  If you have a "pickup extender" bring it along.  It will save your back by reducing bending. The entire cleanup usually takes about two hours to complete.

 

Tree Planting 

Verona

Allegheny Land Trust in partnership with the state Game Commission, Treevitalize Pittsburgh and the Steel City Rowing Club, will host the "Sycamore Island Tree Planting Party" from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 27 at Sycamore Island (Allegheny River). Meet at Steel City Rowing Club, 101 Arch St., Verona.

Volunteers are needed and encouraged to participate. Register by contacting Mike Good at mgood@alleghenylandtrust.org.

Recycling

Monroeville

The Monroeville Chamber of Commerce will host its annual "Shred It Day" from 9 a.m. to noon at Monroeville Community Park West. Confidential paper documents will  be shredded and recycled. The first 75 pounds are free. Call the chamber at 412-856-0622 for more information.

The community can also bring items for electronic recycling. The public works department will accept TVs, computers and computer monitors, microwaves, VCRs, stereos, telephones, video game consoles and small kitchen appliances. Recyclables will be taken to eLoop in Plum.

Oakmont

The Oakmont Chamber of Commerce will host the inaugural "Recycle Rama" on Saturday, April 27, sponsored by Edward Jones, Notary in Your Neighborhood, Oakmont Candle Company, and Riverside Community Church.  

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Guardian Storage Solutions will collect electronics to recyclables for free in the Riverview High School parking lot on Hulton Road. A mobile shredding site will cost $3 per box or bag.

Recycle Rama will accept freon-free appliances, used motor oil, car and truck batteries, alkaline batteries, plastic grocery bags, cell phones, eye glasses, gently used books, paper, phone books, magazines or damaged books, women’s business attire and shoes, prom dresses and shoes, old blue jeans, and greeting cards.

Cell phones, working or broken, will be recycled through the "Cell Phones for Soldiers Program." Towels and blankets will be donated to a local animal shelter. Eye glasses are being collected by Oakmont Lions Club for underprivileged countries. Dress for Success will collect women’s business attire and shoes. Angela’s Angels is collecting prom dresses and shoes. Cotton From Blue to Green is collecting old blue jeans to use for insulation. And greeting cards are being collected by St. Jude’s Hospital to make new cards.
