Inclusive Story Time for Children with Special Needs Kicks Off at Oakmont Carnegie Library

This new program will be offered at the library on the last Thursday of each month at 6 p.m.

The kicked off its new Inclusive Story Time for Children with Special Needs last week.

The program, which is open to children ages 18 and younger, gives children of all abilities a chance to participate at the library.

Youth services librarian Karen Crowell said parents who have children with special needs often are reluctant to have their children participate in events where they have to sit still or be quiet for long periods of time. Crowell's three children are on the Autism spectrum.

"I want this to be a welcoming place where parents know their kids will fit in," she said.

Crowell said she wanted to create a program that approached story time from a sensory basis. Hand fidgets are available for children who want or need them as they listen to the story.

"Children can do hands on activities and during storytime, I want them to shout out answers to my questions," she said. "We're using auditory, visual and tactile methods of learning."

Storytime and activities will remain consistent each month.

"When the kids come in, they'll know what to expect," Crowell said.

Parents and caregivers also can benefit from attending the program. The library staff displays books and resources for parents who want to learn more about parenting children with special needs.

"Sometimes parents just need a break," Crowell said. "I want this to be a forum for parents where they can talk to each other as their kids participate."

There is no cost to attend the program, and healthy snacks will be offered each month from , the library's community sponsor.
