'Miles of Smiles' 5K & Walk Draws Many Supporters

The 'Miles of Smiles' 5K & 1-Mile Walk in Boyce Park drew hundreds of supporters for the families of the late Sunny Carney and Kristin Croyle, and for Lorri Nixon, who is fighting leukemia.

It was a cold morning Sunday at Boyce Park, but that didn't stop the community from coming together to support three local families, all affected by cancer.

The morning's "Miles of Smiles" 5K Run and 1-Mile Walk kicked off with a moment of silence for the late Sunny Carney of Plum and Kristin Croyle of Murrysville. Those in attendance also sent well wishes and thoughts to Plum resident Lorri Nixon, who is battling leukemia.

Carney, who battled carcinoid cancer for 10 years, died on Saturday—one day before the event. Croyle passed away from pancreatic cancer in August, leaving behind a husband and eight children.
