Plum Community Celebrates New Plum Senior Center Addition with Ceremony

Many were in attendance for the special ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Plum Borough residents, volunteers and officials celebrated the opening of the newly expanded Plum Senior Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week.

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, state Rep. Joseph Markosek, county council President Charles Martoni and County Council Vice President Nick Futules also joined in on the celebration.

The $900,000, 2,500 square-foot expansion includes exercise rooms, a shower area, remodeled restrooms, restaurant-grade kitchen, dining room, expanded office space and conference room. For pictures and an article about the new ameneties, click here.

The Plum Senior Community Center serves seniors in Plum and eastern Allegheny County. In addition to social activities and exercise classes, the center serves as a hub for several meal programs, including Meals on Wheels.

The addition was funded through $300,000 in Housing & Urban Development Economic Development Initiative grants acquired by Congressman Jason Altmire, $250,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds, $250,000 from the Community Infrastructure & Tourism Fund, $40,000 in Pennsylvania Community & Economic Development grants acquired by State Representatives Markosek and Tony DeLuca, and $60,000 in Plum Senior Community Center funds.

“This beautiful addition will enable the Plum Senior Community Center to provide additional services and programs to area seniors,” said Fitzgerald.
