Plum Restaurant to Host Fundraiser this Weekend

Palmieri's Restaurant in Plum is hosting the fifth annual fundraiser this Saturday to raise money for selected Steel Valley seniors in memory of Geri Palmieri.

Zanderz Night Club at in Plum is hosting the fifth annual fundraiser for the Geri Palmieri Memorial Scholarship Fund on Saturday.

Geri Palmieri, a business education teacher, passed away suddenly in January 2007. Her husband, John—owner of Palmieri's Restaurant—and sons, John Jr. and Neil, wanted her memory to live on in and out of the classroom. They created the Geri Palmieri Memorial Scholarship Fund to benefit students she would have taught in school.

Every year, business-focused seniors that would have been in Palmieri’s class at Steel Valley High School are selected to receive scholarship money to go toward their tuition at the colleges of their choice. All students that apply are judged based on the educational philosophies that Palmieri promoted in her classroom and an essay.

The students selected must be planning on attending a college and focusing on either business or culinary studies. Steel Valley teacher, Jodi Geyer, presented this year’s scholarship to seniors Kelly Bennett and Sydney Monkelis.

The amount of money the students receive depends on how much money is raised toward the scholarship foundation each year.

Emcee DJ Derek Tabella will kick-off Saturday's event—which begins at 7 p.m.—followed by performances from local rock and roll band The Businessmen. There also will be a Chinese auction, door prizes, 50/50 raffle, a bicycle giveaway and food.

John Palmieri said the event won't disappoint.

“It’s always a great event with great entertainment," he said. "This event benefits not only our scholarship recipients, but also our patrons in attendance because their donation includes a fun-filled evening.”

John Palmieri said he hopes the scholarship helps the students achieve their goals.

“My hopes for the students are that they all do well in school and in life because they are top of the line, honors students and they have the potential to really do well in life,” he said.
