"Rockin' In The Park" Event Faces Insurance Setback

The fate of the "Rockin' in the Park" concert in Verona lies in the organizers' ability to obtain special event insurance.

The Verona "Rockin' in the Park" concert only will be held this year if organizers can buy adequate special event insurance.

The concert—sponsored by the Hula Bar & Grill in Verona, the volunteer fire department and the Verona Chamber of Commerce—is a fundraiser for the Multiple Sclerosis Association and the fire department. It is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 14 at the park next to the .

Though the event already has been held for four years, Kier Ewing, an insurance agent with Kier G. Ewing & Associates Inc. and chamber member, said the chamber's special event insurance policy will change once the it expires in August.

When it is renewed, he said, the policy specifically will not include concerts with 100 or more spectators. The "Rockin' in the Park" concert has an average of 300 visitors.

Ewing said he and Hula Bar owners Randy Satz and Sherry Kai are looking into other providers to obtain the insurance needed for the event.

Kai said she and Satz would check with the fire department to see if their insurance would be adequate for the event.

"We want to make sure everything is OK," Kai said. "We always have."

The borough will provide some help will baracades the day of the event, but the organizers will handle the rest of the setup.

Organizers will report on their findings at the July 26 council work session.
