Children will learn about bicycle safety in Verona on Saturday.

The Verona Bike Derby is an event sponsored by the borough police department, council and Dirty Harry's bike shop.

The derby, held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the borough building parking lot, offers families a chance to learn the ropes about how to ride a bicycle properly.

Children participate in an obstacle course, helmets are given away for free and Dirty Harry's inspects bicycles. There also will be free entertainment and food.

Barry Jeffries, owner of Dirty Harry's in Verona, said the event is important because it sets a precedence for children to check their bicycles before they ride them, wear helmets and practice safe riding.

"We go to a lot of these events, and Verona has one of the better ones," he said. "It's a great time to have one now because kids are getting out of school. They'll be riding their bikes a lot more, so it's a good way to kick off the summer."
