Oakmont Library Will Unveil New Artwork for Children's Department

Work by Oakmont Artist Cy Assad is based on classic literature.

The Oakmont Carnegie Library will be unveiling artwork commissioned for the children’s area of the library this weekend.

The artwork—to be unveiled on Sunday, Feb. 26, from 2 to 4 p.m.—is a series of literature based paintings and 3-D characters created by local Oakmont artist Cy Assad.

The project itself was underwritten by funds from the FOOLs, Oakmont Library’s award-winning Friends Group. Anyone interested in attending the event can view the artwork, speak with the artist and meet members of the FOOLs. Everyone is welcome and light refreshments will be served.

The walls above the built-in bookcases will showcase illustrations out of children’s and teen’s literature. Each painted image has a 3-D piece with it that will look as if it is stepping out of the painting.

The creation of the 3-D images was done using a process perfected by Disney technicians. Each painting is literature based—Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, Moby Dick, Little Red Riding Hood and Lord of the Rings.

The paintings themselves are not based on the Disney illustrations of the books, but rather the original artwork for each of these books. The idea behind installing the illustrations is to create an atmosphere that supports learning through color and imagery.

For young children the colors of the paintings can be used at a teaching tool. For older children the illustrations can be used to talk about the themes of the books or the characters.
