Small Business Owners Invited to Attend Small Business Works Seminar Monday

The event aims to empower and educate small business owners.

Small business owners all over the county—including those in Plum, Oakmont and Verona—are invited to attend the second-annual Small Business Works seminar on Monday, May 21.

The event will be held at 9 a.m. at the Kingsley Association located at 6435 Frankstown Ave. in East Liberty. The event aims to empower and educate small business owners and is hosted by Building Bridges for Business, Allegheny County, the City of Pittsburgh, Chatham University’s Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship, and Duquesne University’s Small Business Development Center.

“Small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy, and their impact and importance have been evident in this tight economy,” said Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald. “Programs like the Small Business Works Seminar strive to eliminate the barriers that small companies face, as well as to empower and educate small business owners so they may take advantage of the opportunities that exist.”

Sue Malone, a nationally renowned expert on small business loans, will discuss a number of topics, including obtaining various types of capital, successfully applying for a loan, and overcoming hidden obstacles.

Participants will be shown how to fill out a sample loan package. The event will also feature resources that will offer growth opportunities for attendees.

“The event is about giving financial options to the small businesses of Pittsburgh,” said Malone. “The first thing we have to understand is that financing is still available for small businesses, both start-up and existing businesses. We have all been through the economic downturn and have heard there is ‘no’ money available. I will let you know, there is money available. It just takes a bit more effort to obtain the financing.”

The May 21 event will be the first in a series of Small Business Works seminars held in various Allegheny County communities throughout 2012. Each event will provide access to education and regional business resources.

“We want to bridge the valuable resources in Western Pennsylvania with business owners and residents who want to start a business,” said Building Bridges for Business President Amanda Wodzenski.

Major sponsors of the Kingsley Small Business Works Seminar include Brunnhuber & Associates, Comcast Business Class, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Pittsburgh Business Times, Pittsburgh Venture Capital, Staples, and Positively Pittsburgh Live.
