Trader Joe's Recalls Frozen Chicken Dinner

The product could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, health officials in the U.S. and Canada said.

For the third time this year, a Trader Joe's product has been recalled.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service on Monday announced that Aliya’s Foods Limited, one of Trader Joe's producers, will recall boxes of the "Butter Chicken with Basmati Rice” line, the Huffington Post reported.

Aliya's will recall 4,865 pounds of frozen butter chicken and rice imported from Canada because the food may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The product is sold in a 12.5-ounce box.

A representative from the Trader Joe's media department said the recall only affects the butter chicken products with the packaging code 30512—a Julian date code indicating that the product was produced on Oct. 31, 2012. That was the only batch affected, the representative said.

According to the Trader Joe's website, the product was shipped to Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania stores—which could include the Washington Road location in Upper St. Clair—might have received the product. Those who purchased this product can return it to the store for a full refund.

About 240 cartons of the butter chicken have been distributed to stores along the East Coast. Nineteen cartons of the product are on hold at a distribution center, Food and Safety News reported.

"Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns," according to the USDA. "Less commonly, persons without these risk factors can be affected.

"Listeriosis can cause fever, headache, neck stiffness, and muscle aches, often preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms."

In September, Trader Joe's announced a voluntary recall of peanut butter products because of possible salmonella contamination. The retailer also pulled several chicken salad and onion products from shelves in July due to the risk of Listeria contamination.
