Survival Tips for Eating Well During the Holidays

It's easy to get sidetracked on eating well during the holiday season. These simple tips help you stay focused and healthy!

Yep, it’s the most wonderful time of the year! Full of family visits, shopping, parties and yes, most of all, eating!

It’s really easy to let all of your good habits just fly right out the window when the holidays come around. Ever wonder why most New Year’s Resolutions are about eating better, exercising more or losing weight? Here are some easy tips to follow for the weeks ahead.

  • Add more to your diet-This may sound counterproductive but adding more healthy foods and fluids earlier in the day leaves less room for tempting junk!
  • Do not deprive yourself of anything-Yes, if you want Gramma Lil’s decadent cheesecake, then by all means, enjoy! If you don’t allow yourself something yummy every once in a while, then you are more likely to scarf down something later that isn’t as delicious!
  • When visiting a buffet, take three things-Yes, three things. Your three FAVORITE things. Savor every bite. Allow the flavors to explode in your mouth. Actually enjoy the food. Then, if you are still hungry, go for three more.
  • Don’t beat yourself up-If you fall off the wagon, gently remind yourself that you are human, and then get right back up on it! It happens to all of us, but scolding yourself just leads to depression and anxiety, which can fuel unhealthier eating.
  • Schedule some down time-It may seem impossible at the busiest time of the year, but it is important to take care of YOU! Get a manicure, take a nap or curl up with a favorite book and cup of tea for even just 30 minutes. Your body and mind will thank you.
  • Learn to recognize your stressors-Yes, lines are RIDICULOUSLY long, and your cousin Thad may be the biggest pain in the rear. But notice how you feel when you encounter whatever gets your hackles up. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that all of this will be over before you know it!
