Duquesne Light Works on Transmission Line Upgrades in Plum and Near Verona

Duquesne Light Company is upgrading almost 8 miles of transmission line through Plum and Penn Hills (near the Verona border). The line's capacity will be raised from 69 kilovolts to 345 kilovolts.

Anyone going through Plum, Verona and Penn Hills might have noticed brown towers popping up in the area over the last few weeks.

Those structures are part of Duquesne Light's Highland-Logan's Ferry 345kV Transmission Line upgrade project.

Duquesne Light is upgrading 7.8 miles of the existing Colfax-Highland 69 kilovolt line to a single circuit 345 kilovolt line beginning at the Highland Substation in Pittsburgh, passing through Penn Hills and terminating at the existing Logan’s Ferry Substation in Plum.

According to the project website, the upgrade is needed to join the generation located in the western area of Duquesne Light’s system to the generation and load located in the northeastern area of its system.

The upgrade is expected to prevent transmission overloads and deterioration of area voltage, as well as increase reliability to the Highland area, including Penn Hills and Plum.

Wire installation is scheduled to begin on Oct. 10 in the area near the Logan's Ferry Substation off Coxcomb Hill Road in Plum.
