Dr. Jaime Mullin, of , said when the temperature drops below ten degrees, the risk for cold weather injuries increase. She noticed more patients coming to the hospital with frost bite and pulmonary symptoms on Wednesday.

Those who are most at risk in these frigid temperatures are children, the elderly and people with medical conditions.

"You should have children cover their faces," Dr. Mullin said. "It's possible to get frost bit cheeks, and lips as well. That's why you heard about so many school delays [Wednesday]."

Dr. Mullin said elderly people should avoid going outside in the freezing, cold temperatures.

"If you need to shovel, get someone to do it for you," Dr. Mullin said, advising senior citizens.

It is also smart to check on any elderly neighbors you have. Often times, the elderly will not adequately heat their homes because of financial concerns. Make sure homes are warm enough, make sure space heaters are properly set up and check the carbon monoxide detectors, especially if the residents are using a generator for heat.

Another group of people Dr. Mullin said the weather is bad for are patients with lung disease. The cold can aggravate symptoms.

"Just bundle, bundle," Dr. Mullin said. "Keep warm, make sure you wear layers."

Dr. Mullin said it's best to wear two sets of gloves, make sure the top gloves are water resistant. For your feet, Dr. Mullin suggested wearing one pair of thick, wool socks underneath boots. Double-socking can worsen frost bite symptoms.
