New 40th Street Bypass on Southbound Route 28 Opens this Weekend in Millvale

Here's a traffic update.

The new southbound (inbound) lanes of Route 28 that will bypass the 40th Street Bridge intersection in Millvale will open to traffic this weekend, Sept. 30 to Oct. 1.

“We are pleased to open these new lanes to inbound traffic on Route 28,” PennDOT District Executive Dan Cessna said. “This is a significant milestone in creating the free flow of traffic many have been waiting for on this heavily traveled corridor.”

To allow the new lanes to open, all southbound traffic will be required to use the express lane traveling under the 40th Street Bridge from 8 p.m. on Friday through approximately 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Turn left onto Liberty Avenue, left onto 32nd or 34th Street, right onto Penn Avenue continuing to Butler Street and to the 40th Street Bridge.

After the new southbound lanes open to traffic Saturday, the express lane will be closed and removed. Northbound traffic will remain a single lane through the 40th Street Bridge area for several more weeks while work occurs to remove the southbound express lane. The northbound off-ramp to the 40th Street Bridge also will remain closed with an anticipated reopening later this fall.

Crews will begin the next phase of work to reconstruct Route 28 between the 40th Street Bridge and the former Millvale Industrial Park. Construction will occur at this time in the center area of Route 28 between directions of travel.
