Several churches in Plum, Oakmont and Verona are holding special services for the Christmas season. Here's a look at some of them. Feel free to add additional services to our events calendar or comment in this article's comments section.
St. John the Baptist in Plum—The church will hold services for the Imaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Friday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m., and on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 9 and 11 a.m. The church's Advent Penance Service will be celebrated on Monday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m.
Our Lady of Joy in Plum—A Holy Day Vigil Mass will be held Friday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. Holy Day Masses will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, at 8:30 a.m. and noon. The church's Advent Penance Service will be celebrated on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m. Several priests will be available for the celebration of the Sacrament of Penance (Confessions). The CCD students will be collecting change during Advent season to donate to build a bridge in Chimbote, Peru.
Verona Presbyterian Church—The Verona Presbyterian Church, 566 South Ave., is hosting an annual child friendly worship service in order to help all children participate in the wonder of Jesus' birth at Christmas on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 11 a.m. The service will include an interactive pageant for young children as well as Christmas carols. There will be gifts for each child and family, and pictures with Santa following the service. This event is designed to share the good news with the community, and is open to all. Oakmont Presbyterian Church—Advent services will be held Sundays at 8:15 and 11 a.m. On Dec. 16, the church will be receiving new or gently used sweaters, mittens, gloves and/or scarves to share the warmth through the ministry of Pittsburgh’s Light of Life Mission. On Dec. 23 at 11 a.m., the Chancel Choir and the church's Christmas Orchestra will perform.
Redeemer Lutheran Church in Oakmont—There will be Wednesday evening Vespers Services Dec. 12 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. Drawing on the Old Testament Prophets and the New Testament Canticles, the series will explore the witness of John the Baptist in his preaching of repentance and faith, the Advent character of God’s mercy in Emmanuel, and life together that we are given under the kingship of Jesus Christ.
