Protect Your Plants—Freeze Warning Issued for Plum-Oakmont Area

A freeze warning will be in effect in Allegheny County—including the Plum-Oakmont area—Monday night into Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service has indicated that freezing temperatures could occur from 10 p.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Temps most likely will be in the 20s—the forecast is 25 in Oakmont and Verona, and 23 in Plum—and unprotected outdoor plants could be damaged or killed. A hard freeze can occur in areas where temperatures are colder than 28 degrees for three or more hours.

The mild weather over the last two weeks has caused trees and flowers to blossom, but it can be severely impacted by the hard freeze tonight.

According to Gardening Know How, you can prevent plants from freezing by covering them with blankets, sheets or sacks to help retain heat. Lightly watering plants a day or two before a freeze also could help because wet soil holds more heat, according to the article.
