Riverview Grand Prix Cancelled Due to Sinkhole

Sunday's bike race no longer is happening.

Because of a sinkhole, the Riverview Grand Prix in Oakmont has been cancelled--for now.

Members of the RGP Organizing Committee said the sinkhole -- located at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Third Street -- wouldn't be repaired in time for Sunday's race. The road currently is blocked off to motorists.

The will still occur as scheduled.

Ed Grystar, one of the founders of the race and a committee member, said alternate routes were explored, but the route is in Oakmont's dense residential and commercial zone, and there were few options even to consider.

He said no sufficiently safe alternate exists consistent with USA Cycling permits, and state and local road closure permits and regulations.

Grystar said he's disappointed because he was excited for the event. He said the committee has discussed rescheduling the race sometime in the next few months.
