Route 286 Widening Project Plans Advance

The project has been included in the Southwestern PA Commission's draft Transportation Improvement Program for 2013 to 2016.

Plans to widen and repave the section of Route 286, also known as the Golden Mile Highway, in Monroeville/Plum have been included in the Southwestern PA Commission’s draft Transportation Improvement Program.

According to the plan, the project is estimated to cost about $14.6 million and includes widening to add a center turn lane and bridge preservation on three structures between Route 22 and Old Frankstown Road/Sagamore Road.

If approved, the project would be completed in 2014.

State Rep. Joseph Markosek, D-Monroeville, applauded PennDOT District 11 leaders and the Southwestern PA Commission for including the project.

“This is great news for people in Monroeville and Plum who travel the Golden Mile Highway every day,” Markosek said. "This has been a high-priority project for me and the people of District 25, and it’s great to see the valuable knowledge I learned as chairman of the House Transportation Committee coming to fruition in a project that will benefit these communities.

“If there’s one thing the state can do to improve commerce, it is provide safe, reliable roads so residents can get where they need to go and businesses can get their goods to market. Improving Route 286 will help both residents and businesses.”

The Draft 2013-2016 TIP is available for public review and comment through June 18. More information can be found on the Southwestern PA Commission website here: www.spcregion.org/trans_tip_sched.shtml.
