Squirrel Hill Tunnel Detour Route Improvements Begin Monday

Work will be performed during off-peak hours.

Work to improve the detour route for the Squirrel Hill Tunnel on the Parkway East (I-376) in Pittsburgh will begin today, April 9.

Inbound (westbound) will begin in late July. To prepare for additional traffic on the detour routes (see attached), PennDOT will be making improvements that include milling, base repair, mechanical patching, resurfacing and minor drainage work. Lane closures and single lane alternating use traffic will occur on the following routes during these timeframes, weather permitting:

Monday and Tuesday, April 9 and 10

  • Beechwood Boulevard from South Dallas Avenue to Forbes Avenue

Wednesday and Thursday, April 11 and 12

  • Forbes Avenue from South Dallas Avenue to South Braddock Avenue

Friday, April 13

  • South Braddock Avenue from Forbes Avenue to Swissvale Avenue

Week 2

Day work: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Monday through Friday, April 16 to 20

  • Beechwood Boulevard from Forward Avenue to Shaw Avenue

Week 3

Night Work: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Monday and Tuesday, April 23 and 24

  • Forbes Avenue from Murray Avenue to Beechwood Boulevard

Wednesday through Friday, April 25 to 27

  • Penn Avenue from Busway to Swissvale Avenue

Week 4

Night Work: 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Monday and Tuesday, April 30 and May 1

  • Penn Avenue from Busway to Swissvale Avenue

The includes updating electrical, lighting, air control and ventilation systems, structural repairs to the walls and arched ceiling, tile repairs, installation of a water line and other improvements. Overall work will conclude in summer 2014. The prime contractor is the Walsh Construction Company of Canonsburg.

Motorists are advised to use caution, slow down, and expect changing traffic patterns when traveling through the area. Log on to 511pa.com or call 511 from any phone to check traffic conditions on major roadways before traveling.
