Verona Officials to Discuss Field Lights with Residents

Verona Council expects to set a meeting with residents near Cribbs Field.

Verona officials hope to meet with residents of the neighborhood surrounding Cribbs Field some time next week to discuss the possible installation of field lights.

At Tuesday's council meeting, Councilman Dom Conte said residents should receive a letter by the end of the week notifying them of a meeting date. A date and time have not been set yet.

Officials previously had agreed to install light poles around the field near the intersection of South Avenue and Athletic Street. Conte said there has been some opposition by residents, so officials want them to voice their concerns.

There would be about six light poles—five lights or so per pole. Conte stressed the lights are not stadium-type lights and would have shields to avoid overflow into the residential neighborhood.

Should officials decide to go ahead with the installation of the poles, Conte said, the lights would have to be turned off at a specific time.

Councilwoman Peggy Suchevich agreed.

She said the lights most likely would be used for some night games and to give teams more time to make up games that are cancelled due to rain.

Conte and Suchevich stressed the lights would be used for children's ballgames, not adult leagues.

Officials will take residents' concerns into consideration before making a final decision on the matter.
