UPDATE: This Work Has Been Canceled Due To Weather

Lane changes on the Parkway East this weekend will not be in effect

Plum residents traveling the Parkway East this weekend should be alert for work to improve bridge transitions that will continue, weather permitting, this Friday and Saturday, May 13-14, according to Jim Struzzi, PennDOT District 11 press officer. 

Crews will be replacing pavement transitions at several bridge locations between the Birmingham Bridge and the Bates Street/Oakland Interchange (Exit 73) interchange. The outbound off-ramp to Forbes Avenue will be closed.

Lane closures will be necessary to perform the improvements. Work will occur from 7 p.m. on Friday through 6 p.m. on Saturday according to the following schedule:

Inbound (westbound)

  • Single lane closure at the bridge over the Bates Street/Oakland Interchange from 7-10 p.m. Friday. At 10 p.m. two of three lanes will be closed allowing only one inbound lane to remain open overnight through 9 a.m. on Saturday. At 9 a.m. Saturday, two lanes will be reopened with only the center inbound lane closed through 6 p.m. Saturday.

Outbound (eastbound)

  • Single lane traffic in the area of the bridge over Brady Street (under the Birmingham Bridge) from 9 p.m. on Friday through 1 p.m. on Saturday.
  • The outbound off-ramp to Forbes Avenue/Oakland will be closed from 9 p.m. on Friday to 6 p.m. on Saturday. Signs will be posted to guide motorists to use the Grant Street off-ramp to the Boulevard of the Allies or continue outbound to the Edgewood Swissvale interchanges, exit and take the inbound Parkway East to the Oakland interchange.

The $3.2 million project includes repairing, rehabilitating and overlaying pavement transitions at various bridge locations within the project area. The prime contractor is the Golden Triangle Construction Company, Inc. of Imperial, PA. Overall work will be completed in early summer 2011.

PennDOT advises motorists to slow down, allow extra time and use caution when traveling through the area. Log on to 511pa.com or call 511 from any phone to check traffic conditions and cameras on major roadways before traveling.
