Page to Screen—The Help

Join us on Monday, April 2nd at 6:30 pm at the Oakmont Carnegie Library to watch the film based on Kathryn Stockett’s bestselling novel The Help. This film features a terrific cast led by Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer and Bryce Dallas Howard.

The Help is an inspirational, courageous yet very funny book about white and black women living in the contrasting world of gentility, prejudice, and violence of 1960's Mississippi as Jim Crow laws and attitudes were challenged. The women build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project — one that breaks society’s rules and puts them all at risk. The Help is a timeless, universal and triumphant book about the ability to create change. This film is rated PG-13 for thematic material.

On Monday, April 9th at 6:30 pm librarian Stephanie Zimble will be leading a discussion about the novel and the film. We will be looking at similarities and differences between the two, as well as looking at some historical context for the events that take place in the story.
