Top Tip Tuesday: Learn to Cook!

Save money, keep slim: learn to cook

by Joline Atkins of Slimsavers.com

Recently, a friend of mine wrote a post about an experience she had in a grocery store. She was filling the belt with her items, and it was a big shopping day. The woman behind her remarked, "Wow, you must like to cook!"

My friend, who has a large family said, "Yes, I do."

The woman following her couldn't let up. "Do you cook everyday?"

"Primarily, yes." My friend added.

"Every day???!!! Don't you ever eat out?"

"Well, not really. It's expensive."

"Wow. That's a lot of food to cook!"

Sigh.

My daughter recently learned in science class that while we think our country spends a boat-load on groceries, we actually don't. We spend more on eating out then we do at the store where we can purchase items to CREATE our own meals. Interestingly enough, our country's obesity rate is rising, as we seem to consume more food than we reasonably should. Something is off.

What LOOKED like a heck of a lot of food on a check-out belt was actually the makings of several fine home-cooked meals.

And THIS is what shocked the onlooker?

Our thinking is so warped.

Learn to cook.

Yeah, that's my tip. Find some recipes, organize them, make a list, purchase the items needed to make those recipes, and then cook those recipe.

Warning: this tip takes a bit longer than just calling out for a pizza or Chinese take-a-way.

But, in the world of Slim and Saving? It's a win-win.
