Obituary - Betty E. Hicks

Betty E. Hicks, of Three Lakes, WI, mother of Karen Smith, of Oakmont, passed away at age 96.

Betty E. Hicks, of Three Lakes, WI, formerly of Western Springs, IL, passed from her earthly life on May 13, 2012, at the age of 96. 

 

Betty was born May 28, 1915 to G. E. (Ed) and Karin Marander in Ironwood, MI.  Betty was a graduate of Ironwood High School and Gogebic Jr. College, and worked for several years as a librarian at the Ironwood High School.  She moved to Chicago in 1942, where she was organist and parish visitor at Calvary Lutheran Church and performed with the Chicago Piano Symphony.  In 1943 she married John F. Hicks; they lived in Western Springs for 47 years before retiring to northern Wisconsin.

Betty was well-known in West Suburban music circles as a church organist, a performing member and past president of the Western Springs Music Club, and a member of Sigma Alpha Iota Int’l Music Fraternity.  She was very active in the Western Springs Methodist Church and the Western Springs Historical Society.

Betty was predeceased by her husband in December 2011, her parents, and two sisters.  She is survived by her daughter Karen (the late Arthur) Smith of Oakmont, PA, her granddaughter Ashley Smith of Cleveland Heights, OH, step-grandchildren Scott (Sonia) Smith of Arlington, VA, and Victoria (Timothy) Slemmons of Dubuque, IA, two step-great-grandchildren, and a sister Jeanette Norquist of Homosassa, FL.

 

Burial will be in Ironwood, MI.
