Obituary—John W. Asherman Sr.

John W. Asherman Sr. (Jack), 87, died  on January 13, 2013 of Plum (East Oakmont), Pa. at Seasons Hospice in Phoenixville, Pa.

Born in Dewey, Ill to Frank E. Asherman and Lottie B. (Underwood), husband of Blanche M. (Boznar) for 65 years, loving father of sons John Jr. (Charlotte) of Coatesville, Pa. and Dana (Kirsten Aguirre) of Baden, Pa., brother of Robert (Eloise) and Carolyn Hinners (Charles), both of Champaign, Ill. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Jack enlisted in the Navy upon graduation from Champaign High School in 1943, serving as a field hospital Corpsman in England, and later in a Beach Party unit attached to the USS Garrard (APA) in the Pacific Theater until the end of the war. Attending college on the GI bill, he graduated from the University of Illinois College of Business with a degree in Accounting in 1949. After several years in private accounting, he went to work at Edgewater Steel Corp. in Oakmont, Pa., where he was a cost accountant and pay-master. He retired in 1983 with over 30 years of service. Jack enjoyed politics, and the outdoors---golfing, camping, skiing, and traveling throughout Europe, New Zealand, Canada, and much of the US. He was a long-time member of the Oakmont Elks lodge and on the board of the SNPJ Heritage Center in Enon Valley, Pa.

Relatives and friends are invited to a celebration of Jack’s life at English Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 378 Maryland Ave., Oakmont, Pa., 15139, on January 26, from 11 AM to Noon where a Celebratory Service will be held at Noon. Military honors to follow at the funeral home.

Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
