DUI Checkpoints Planned for St. Patrick's Day Weekend

Area police departments are rolling out sobriety checkpoints and extra DUI patrols this weekend.

With all the events happening in and around Pittsburgh this weekend, area police departments want everyone to have fun—but they also want to keep everyone safe.

The sent out a message via Nixle asking all residents to refrain from drinking and driving. According to the note, 379 people died in alcohol related crashes last year in Pennsylvania.

The Castle Shannon police department, in conjunction with the Mt. Lebanon Area DUI Task Force, will increase efforts to find impaired drivers. They also are reminding drivers and passengers to buckle their seatbelts.

Heidelberg police will have extra officers out Friday and Saturday nights with roving DUI patrols continuing through 4 a.m. Sunday.

The Pittsburgh police will be conducting DUI patrols and managing sobriety checkpoints throughout the City of Pittsburgh this weekend.

The Pittsburgh DUI Task Force will have extra officers on patrol looking for impaired drivers over the weekend due to all the activities that are planned to take place in the city.

The city's annual —which will be attended by Vice President Joe Biden—takes place Saturday, and the NCAA Basketball Tournament is this weekend as well.
