Oakmont Police Investigate Thefts from Cars

Police have simple advice for residents: Lock your cars.

At least 12 Oakmont residents reported thefts from their vehicles over the last week.

Chief David DiSanti said police currently are investigating the matter and have some suspects.

The areas that were targeted were Washington and Maryland avenues; and Eighth, Tenth and Eleventh streets. The most thefts—six—occurred on Eleventh Street.

DiSanti described the thefts as "car shopping," where people go out into the late hours of the night and try to get into as many cars as possible. Because many Oakmont residents park on the street, it's easier for theives to go unnoticed.

"It usually ties in with drug-related problems," he said.

All cars that were broken into were unlocked.

"There's no better opportunity than that," DiSanti said. "To stop it, you have to lock up and set your car alarm if you have one."
