Oakmont Senior Citizens Targeted by Phone Scam

Police are asking residents to be aware and not give out financial information over the phone.

Two Oakmont senior citizens have reported being victims of a phone scam within the last week.

According to , an 86-year-old resident and an 82-year-old resident reported that they received phone calls from people pretending to be family members in trouble.

During the phone calls, the family members—a granddaughter and a grandson in these cases—were said to have either been arrested for speeding/drug paraphernalia by local police, or by police officers in Canada. The callers, who asked for money to be bailed out of jail, used the actual names of the victims' family members.

In at least one of the phone calls, there was another person involved impersonating a police officer.

Both of the victims called their family members after the scam, only to find out they hadn't been in trouble.

Police are asking residents to be aware and not provide financial information over the phone unless they are positive they know who they are talking to.

Any other scam attempts should be reported to Oakmont police at 412-828-3131.
