Plum Police Carry 'Flame of Hope' in Special Olympics Torch Run

The run begins in Pittsburgh today, June 5, and ends in State College Thursday.

Plum police officers will be running for a cause Tuesday.

Officers have signed up to participate in the PA Special Olympics 2012 “Be A Fan” Torch Run, where more than 200 members of law enforcement will carry the “flame of hope” during a 150-mile run starting at PNC Park's home plate in Pittsburgh and ending at Medlar Field's home plate in State College. The run begins today, Tuesday, and ends on Thursday.

The Plum Police Department is one of more than 40 law enforcement groups that has committed to “own” its own leg of the run. The three-day run will end with the lighting of the flame of hope during the Opening Ceremonies of the Special Olympics Pennsylvania.

Officer Jeremy Cumberledge is the Plum Police Department's team leader. Also on the team are Eric Zdobinski, Tim Cerula, Nick Iachini and Jay Kapusta.

The group will be running a little bit over 2.5 milles between Delmont to New Alexandria, according to police Chief Frank Monaco.

"We will do our best to honor all the remarkable Special Olympics athletes and make our Plum Borough supporters proud," the team wrote in a flier on the borough website.
