Teens Face Charges After Breaking Into Elementary School

Six teenagers from the Oakmont-Verona area broke into Tenth Street School last month.

Six teenagers from Oakmont and Verona are facing charges in juvenile court after being accused of breaking into Tenth Street Elementary School in the middle of the night.

According to Oakmont police Chief David DiSanti, the six juveniles—ages 14 to 17—broke into the school between 1 and 4 a.m. on Feb. 16. After conducting an extensive investigation, all students involved were charged last week.

DiSanti said the juveniles—all are students at Riverview High School—entered the school, damaged a curtain in the auditorium and stole several items. The stolen items have been recovered. The teens will face burglary, theft and criminal mischief charges.

"When kids get in trouble, the juvenile court and police work together to try to help the kids," DiSanti said.

DiSanti, who has supported the implementation of a community curfew, reiterated his support after the incident involving the school. He also commended the officers and school officials for "working hand in hand" on the matter.
