A Verona man was caught stealing from cars in the area of Jacob and Whited streets.

A Verona man was arrested in Brookline on Tuesday morning after a witness told police he saw the man breaking into cars in the area of Jacob and Whited streets.

Pittsburgh police responded to the 2000 block of Jacob Street for a report of a suspicious person. A witness told officers that he'd seen a man enter two cars that did not belong to him, then leave the area and walk toward Whited Street.

Police and a K-9 unit conducted a search in the area. Mark Cahill, 47, was found in a vehicle in the 1900 block of Jacob Street and was arrested.

According to the police report, officers found Oxycotin, money, and items believed to have been stolen from vehicles on the street.

Cahill was charged with theft from vehicle and possession of a controlled substance. He was taken to Allegheny County Jail.

Cahill also is awaiting a Feb. 14 non-jury trial in Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas after being accused of stealing from vehicles in Oakmont Borough. Oakmont police charged him with theft from a motor vehicle, loitering and prowling at night, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness in May 2012.
