Verona Man Who Shot at FBI Agents Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison

An international fugitive who shot at police and surrendered after a three-hour standoff on Center Avenue in Verona last October was sentenced Tuesday.

Frank Perez, Jr., 31, of Verona has been sentenced in federal court to 15 years in prison, five years supervised release, $64,266 restitution and forfeiture of four firearms on his conviction of assaulting federal officers and violations of federal firearm laws. 

United States District Judge Nora Barry Fischer imposed the sentence on Perez.

According to information presented to the court, on Oct. 4, 2011, Perez forcibly assaulted, resisted, opposed, impeded and interfered with Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, through the use of three firearms, while the agents were engaged in their official duties.

In addition, Perez used, carried and discharged the firearms in connection with that crime of violence.

Perez was wanted on murder charges in Indiana and kidnapping charges in Mexico. When FBI agents caught wind that he had been living in Verona for a few months, their arrest attempts led to the October standoff.

Assistant United States Attorney Troy Rivetti prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.

U.S. AttorneyDavid J. Hickton commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Perez.
