Oakmont Council Focuses on Future Road Projects

Borough council is getting ready for road work this summer.

Now that spring is here, Oakmont Council is getting ready for road projects.

Curb, road paving and brick reconstruction projects in the borough are expected to occur in the near future.

Last week, council hired Joseph Palmieri Construction Inc. to replace curbs along Allegheny Avenue from College to California avenues for $23,500.

Another firm submitted a lower bid of $18,185, but officials said Joseph Palmieri Construction was the lowest responsible bidder, due to mixed feedback about timeliness from references.

Because the work affects traffic on one of the borough's main roads, Councilman Tim Favo said timeliness and following a schedule is important to the project.

Officials also are working on preparing a list of roads to be paved this summer, as well as specifications for brick replacement on Allegheny River Boulevard. They agreed to allot an extra $175,000 from the borough's reserves toward the road projects.

Favo requested that $300,000 worth of paving work be done this year.

The replacement of bricks between the 500- and 600-blocks of the boulevard is estimated to cost about $348,000—about $80,000 more than officials had expected.

Council agreed to have engineers prepare specifications for the work. Favo said a portion of that project might have to wait if costs come back too high.
