Oakmont Borough Council Notebook: June Work Session Meeting

The June Work Session Meeting of the Oakmont Borough Council focused on Knox Boxes, Commercial Parking and Allegheny River Boulevard repairs, among a host of other topics.

Oakmont Borough Council continues to consider the requirement of a Knox Box on new structures.

At Monday's council meeting, Oakmont Volunteer Fire Department member Garrett Segelson stressed the importance of new structures having a Knox Box installed during the time of construction or during times of building occupant transition.

A Knox Box is a small, wall-mounted safe that holds building keys for firefighters and EMS to access a building during emergencies.  Segelson said that knowing a building has a Knox Box is crucial when it comes to fighting fires and can save occupants/business owners money by not having to use forced entry.

“A fire doubles every 30 seconds,” Segelson said.  “It’s that first five minutes that the next five hours depends on.  It’s for our safety and the safety of the community. It’s to everyone’s advantage to know in advance that there is one.”

Council President Timothy Favo thanked Segelson and the other members of the fire department for their hard work on a new resolution, and he noted that it was a good starting point for the council members to work with.  The Knox Box resolution revisions are ongoing.

Boulevard repairs

Councilman Timothy Milberger presented a power point/slide show of Allegheny River Boulevard repairs.  His power point discussion touched on some of the major issues and a potential repair plan.  Some of the many issues Milberger highlighted included: street assessments, water control, curb repair, brick patterns, crosswalks and bulkheads.

Milberger said that he will work to obtain estimates for a number of repairs and will see how much of the work can be done within the budget.

Other topics discussed at the June meeting included:

  • Borough Manager Bruce Jamison gave updates on the Riverside Park Renovation Project including the installation of conduits to supply more electricity to the park and the installation of a new sewer line.
  • Favo and Councilman Ronald Scott discussed revisions to the commercial parking section of the vehicle code. Some of the potential revisions include: increasing the length of time you can park in the commercial area from two to three hours, the allocation of alternative parking and the painting of horizontal parking lines to allow for more parking.
