Oakmont Council Notebook: March Voting Meeting

A wrap-up of issues discussed at Oakmont Council's March voting meeting.

If you’re making an illegal turn on Wade Lane, chances are that soon, someone may be watching.

Borough police are stepping up their efforts to increase enforcement of the turn from Hulton Road onto Wade Lane.

Turning is prohibited at the intersection between 7 and 9 a.m. and and 4 p.m.

Police Chief David DiSanti said the primary reason for prohibiting the turn is to ensure the safety of pedestrians, especially the borough’s children while they are walking to and from school.

“(The illegal turn) is a very grave danger to the children," he said.

Concern over the turn is nothing new, DiSanti said.

“It’s been a problem for a long time, but it seems to be even more of a problem lately,” he said.

DiSanti said he expects that the increased enforcement will improve safety at Wade Lane.

No Parking signs on Morris Street to be considered

The borough is considering putting up "No Parking" signs on the north and west sides of Morris Street to allow emergency responders’ vehicles better access to the street in the event of an emergency.

Council discussed the possibility of a 30-day trial period to see how the change will go over with residents and businesses.

“You always have to go slowly with these things,” council president Tim Favo said.

DiSanti suggested that a map be drawn up showing the proposed changes and that businesses along the street be brought into the discussion.

“We’re glad to critique it and tweak it and make it work,” DiSanti said.

Council plans to discuss the issue further at the upcoming April 4 work session.
