Plum Borough Council Notebook: August Voting Meeting

A roundup of what was covered at Plum's August voting meeting

Here’s a roundup of matters addressed at the borough’s August regular meeting.

Over the Phone Interpretation

The borough’s police and EMS units will begin utilizing a new translating service that will allow officers and emergency responders to communicate with speakers of 150 different languages with just a single phone call.

Called Over the Phone Interpretation, the service will be provided by DT Interpreting of Carnegie and will be available on the police and EMS cell phones.

“If somebody’s in an accident and we need to interpret now we have a vehicle to do so,” Mayor Rich Hrivnak said.

The cost for the service, according to Plum police Chief Frank Monaco, is $1.25 per call.

The service will be available 24 hours a day and could be used not only in the case of accidents, but also to talk to crime victims, he said.

While Plum police and EMS have access to a language interpretation system through Allegheny County, it’s not as extensive as what DT Interpreting offers.

“The county has interpreters, but I don’t think they have 150 of them,” Monaco said.

Renton Rod and Gun Club

Council approved a resolution recognizing Renton Rod and Gun Club as a civic organization. The designation makes the Rod and Gun Club eligible for a Pennsylvania Small Games of Chance license, which it had indicated interest in obtaining. Officials investigated and found that there was a measure passed in 1989 which permitted eligible Plum organizations to apply for the license. Councilman Charles McMeekin abstained from voting because he is a member of the club.

 Rock Salt Contract

Council approved a contract to purchase rock salt for the coming winter to Cargill Inc. The company offered the lowest price at $55.83 per ton, according to officials. Bids came in through the South Hills Area Council of Government (SHACOG) and the Turtle Creek Valley Council of Governments.

 Storm Sewer Project

A contract for work on the Holiday Park East Storm Sewer Project was awarded to R and B Contracting. The company was the lowest bidder, proposing to do the job for about $134,000.

 Senior Center Events

Melanie Parente, the Plum community senior center’s program coordinator, provided information on several upcoming events, including a performance by fiddler players on Aug. 24, a corn roast on Aug. 25 and a murder mystery dinner fundraiser at Pugliano’s Italian Grill on Sept. 17. Anyone interested in more information can call the center at 412-795-2330.
