Plum Council Notebook: Sept. 7 Work Session

PennDOT approves the borough's request for warning signs at the intersection of Old Leechburg and Sardis Roads; plus a roundup of other items discussed by council last week.

Here are of the some items discussed at Plum Council's Sept. 7 work session:

Signs to be Added to Old Leechburg, Sardis Intersection

Officials say the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will install large signs that read “Opposing Traffic Doesn’t Stop” at the intersection of Old Leechburg and Sardis roads.

The measure is the result of PennDOT’s fifth traffic study on the intersection. The fourth – which investigated whether the intersection should be a four-way stop—was completed less than a year ago.

At that time, PennDOT didn’t find a need for stop signs in addition to the two already at the intersection.

“That’s better, that’s progress,” Mayor Richard Hrivnak said when he heard of the new solution.

Drivers can expect the signs anywhere from 30 to 60 days from now, according to officials.

Police Chief Severance Pay

The borough is considering changes to Plum Police Chief Frank Monaco’s employment contract.

At the recommendation of the personnel committee, council might approve the addition of severance pay to the conditions of Monaco’s contract at its regular meeting tonight, Sept. 12.

No payment would be due if termination was for just cause.

The original contract did not include severance pay, but its inclusion is customary, according to officials.

They also stressed that Monaco was not leaving his position with the borough.

Dumpster for Soccer Association

The borough’s soccer association is asking Plum officials to pick up a one- time $500 charge to cover the costs of a Dumpster at its soccer tournament.

Officials said that provider Allied Waste had dropped costs for the 30-yard Dumpster from $750 to $500 for the Association.

Council will consider the request at its regular meeting tonight.

Council meetings on borough’s television channel

Officials reported that there have been problems with the equipment that plays council meetings on the borough’s local television station.

The borough is working on correcting the problem.

The glitch does not affect the broadcast of live meetings, officials said.
