Plum School Board Notebook: April Meeting

Here's a roundup of items discussed at the Plum School Board April meetings:

Musical Content

Resident Reed Clarke wasn't thrilled with this year's musical.

Clarke, who attended a performance of the said he wanted to leave during intermission because of the general content of the play. He said the themes included—theft, lying, deceit, profanity, sex, drugs and prostitution—were not appropriate for many in the audience as well as the student actors.

"It seemed very inappropriate for high school students," Clarke said.

He said he hopes the selection process for musicals is revised for future performances.

School board member Richard Zucco said the policy committee can investigate the matter further.

Service Animals

The district now has a policy in place for students who need service animals in school.

Zucco said officials were approached by a family whose daughter would be needing a service dog next school year. He said he hopes to receive more feedback about the new policy from the family.

"It's a good policy to have, and we hope to continue to get information," he said.

Pivik

School board member Shane McMasters said construction of the new George Pivik Elementary school should be completed by this month. Officials were going to tour the facility soon, and they said they hope to have a dedication ceremony in September.

Officials also plan to let parents tour the school over the summer before the new school year.

Facilities

The board appointed PA Soil and Rock Inc. as the district’s Engineering Firm of Record.

The board agreed to advertise for bids for the repair work on the Plum High School Stadium Grandstands.

A line striping machine to replace the current model will be purchased at a cost of $4,900 from Sherwin-Williams.

Personnel

The board approved the retirements of James Holmes, custodian at Plum High School; and Colleen Rydeski, paraprofessional at Adlai Stevenson Elementary School.

Brock Yohn was hired as an Alternative Education Social Studies Teacher, effective April 27, at $27 per hour, for the remainder of the 2011-12 school year.
