Verona Council discussed several items during its Oct. 11 voting meeting. Here's a roundup:

Police Incident

Council and members of the audience thanked the for a job well done during an Oct. 4 standoff in which international fugitive . Perez was arrested and no one was hurt.

Verona police Chief Ron McLemore said it was the first time he had encountered an incident of that sort. He said though it was a scary situation, the police department did a good job handling the situation.

McLemore also said officers learned from the incident and have pinpointed things they can tweak.

The audience applauded for the police department and praised their work.

November Council Meeting

The Nov. 8 regular council meeting has been cancelled due to election day. A combined work session and regular meeting will be held on Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.

West Railroad Avenue Paving

Council awarded a contract to of Oakmont to pave West Railroad Avenue from James Street to Grant Avenue for $29,880. The borough received a grant for $23,000 for the project.

East Railroad Avenue Property

Officials are seeking bids for 535 East Railroad Ave. once more.

The property used to be owned by Guardian Angel Ambulance and was turned over to the borough. Officials had been asking for a minimum of $10,000 for the property.

After they didn't receive any bids, they're asking for a minimum bid of $6,000.

Blighted Properties

Borough officials expect to pass a blighted property ordinance at the Oct. 25 council work session.

The ordinance would give Verona the right to act in accordance with the Neighborhood Blight Reclamation and Revitalization Act of 2010, a state law which allows municipalities to take legal action against owners of blighted property.  

Upcoming Events

  • The Verona Fraternal Order of Eagles Club's bar bingo will be held on Friday nights at 7 p.m. Children can attend but must leave by 9. The bingo serves as a fundraiser for community events. The club is located at the intersection of East Railroad Avenue and James Street.
  • The Riverview Raiders annual bonfire will take place in the Verona Municipal Park (next to the ) on Oct. 27. The event will start at 7 p.m.
  • The borough will host an indoor movie on Oct. 28. "Spooky Buddies" will play in council chambers in the borough building at 7:30 p.m.
  • The Halloween parade will be held on Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. Families are to meet at the borough building.
  • The annual Verona-Oakmont Christmas Parade and Festival will be held Nov. 19. Festivities begin at 5 p.m. The Verona Chamber of Commerce also will hold its second-annual street fair on that day.
