Verona Council Notebook: Police Hired, Grant & More

Here's a look at items discussed at Tuesday's Verona Council workshop.

Verona Council discussed several topics at its Sept. 25 workshop meeting. Here's a roundup:

Police Officers

Two part-time police officers have been hired.

The officers, Dennis Rupert and John Vojitko, will join the Verona Police Department. Councilman Pat McCarthy said both were interviewed and had meetings with police Chief Ron McLemore.

McCarthy said Vojitko is currently an officer at the University of Pittsburgh Greensburg and Rupert is with the PA National Guard.

Grant

The borough received a $2,500 grant from the Local Government Academy to help attract new businesses.

Bridget Seery, local business owner and chamber of commerce member, said the purpose of the grant is to complete a market analysis for the borough.

Officials agreed to contribute $250—a 10 percent match.

Hoffman Kennels

Officials are hoping to set up a meeting with Gary Hoffman, owner of the borough's animal control service, Hoffman Kennels.

Council members said a committee would get together to meet with the dog catcher to discuss the borough's service contract among other matters. Recently, a group of residents from the east suburbs—the kennel serves many communities, including Verona, Plum and Oakmont—have gotten together to voice bad experiences with Hoffman.

Officals said they would have more to report at the next council meeting.

House Numbers

Councilwoman Rhoda Gemellas-Worf said she has noticed a lot of homes within the borough that don't have house numbers.

Mayor Dave Ricupero said he would have police look into it.

Patching

Councilman Dom Conte said the road crew is patching the alley way between Second and Third Street.
